Application/Enrolment Information for 2009/2010

Application and Admission

Application deadline:
June 1st, 2009 for the 1st semester to all programs
December 1st for the spring semester of preparatory courses
For exchange students (no fees): 30th June, 2009 for all semester
15. October 2009 for spring semester

Application fee:
EUR 100 (non-refundable)
Your application will be considered if you transfer the application fee to the bank account of BME, and submit all the required documents.
Documents to be submitted to complete the application:
  • application form completely filled (be careful that your personal data appear correctly as are in your passport because they will be the form to appear in your transcripts and degree certificate)
  • copy of your passport
  • secondary high school reports relevant to your application, with special reference to mathematics, physics for engineering and English language ability. (Physics is not needed for Business and Management Studies, but applicants are required to submit school reports with their studies in history and/or other social sciences)
  • general certificate of your education - (G.C.E.) or any equivalent secondary high school diploma
  • one of the following documents of English language proficiency: a) TOEFL IBT test score of 90, or PBT score 550, b) Cambridge First Certificate "B", c) IELTS score of 5.0 (recommended for B.Sc., required for M.Sc. and Ph.D. applications)
  • official transcripts, degrees/diplomas of any higher education already completed
  • six recent photographs
  • curriculum vitae (autobiography/resume)
  • two letters of recommendation (for M.Sc. and Ph.D. applications)
  • Study Plan (for Ph.D. applications only)
Exchange students do not pay application fees.

NOTE: NOTARIZED ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS ARE REQUIRED FOR ALL WRITTEN DOCUMENTS EXCEPT YOUR PASSPORT. Notarization is necessary for every school leaving document even if the original is in English.

Notification of your acceptance/rejection will be sent to you after your complete application has been reviewed. All necessary further information will be attached to the letter of acceptance.

Tuition fees

All tuition fees for the first semester must be paid prior to enrolment. At the time, you will need to present proof that you have paid your first semester fee via bank transfer. In case of late or partial payment of tuition fees, the University reserves the right to refuse enrolment.

Tuition fees for 2009/2010 academic year are as follows:
  For non-EU citizens For EU citizens
Pre-Engineering Course, and General Course in Architecture EUR 3,200 per semester
Undergraduate Tuition Fees, leading to B.Sc. degree EUR 3,200 per semester EUR 2,250 per semester
Graduate Tuition Fees, leading to M.Sc. degree for graduates of external higher education institutions EUR 3,500 per semester EUR 3,200 per semester
Graduate Tuition Fees, leading to M.Sc. degree for graduates of BME EUR 3,200 per semester EUR 2,750 per semester
Postgraduate Tuition Fees, leading to Ph.D. or DLA degree from EUR 4,500 per semester depending on the character of the research and course programs
Tuition Fees for special students (courses leading to no degree) EUR 110/credit points (min. 12 lessons per week)

Faculty of Civil Engineering applies a credit based tuition fee.

NOTE:
  1. Tuition fees are generally not refundable.
  2. Please inquire in your bank if there is any handling fee for your money transfer to ensure that full tuition amount be transferred.
VISA INFORMATION:
Non-EU and non-EEA (European Economic Area) citizens, please contact the nearest Hungarian Consulate to learn if you need visa to Hungary. (List of embassies and consulates are at www.mfa.gov.hu/kum/en/bal/missions/missions_abroad.)
The entry visa - "RESIDENT VISA FOR STUDY PURPOSES" - is to be obtained before departure from your country. Among others, you must present the Letter of Acceptance from BME together with the proof of payment of the first semester tuition fee, proof of your accommodation in Budapest and a passport valid at least until October 2011. The process takes two weeks or more.
Please note that the visa will be valid for 30 days only, and after your arrival in Budapest you'll have another 30 days to pick up your residence permit (after registration at the university).

Enrolment/Registration

Registration period: from August 24th to September 4th, 2009.

All accepted new students are expected to report to the International Education Center, Building Z, ground floor, in the Students' Office to register.

To All Students!
Come and register in the Students' Office of the International Education Center within 48 hours after your arrival in Budapest. It is necessary for your address registration due in 15 days.

EU citizens, please note that you have to apply for a residence permit for study purpose in Hungary. Remember to present your EU Health Insurance card at registration. More information and help, please find in the Students' Office.

Orientation Program

Between September 2nd and 5th, 2009 for all newly enrolled students: Pre-Engineering, Pre-Business and General Course in Architecture, B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. as well as for exchange and transfer students, an orientation program will be organised.

The orientation program includes introductory lectures, access to the Internet and the Library and a sightseeing tour.

START of the fall semester academic program is September 7th, 2009 for all students.

TO NEWLY ENROLLED FRESHMEN ONLY

PLACEMENT TESTS: 31st August, 1st - 2nd September in Mathematics, English language, Physics for all students and freehand drawing on 3rd for Architecture students.
Students who pass the tests will receive confirmation of their places in the first year of the B.Sc. programs. Students found to have inadequate skills in Mathematics, English, and Physics will be directed to the one year Pre-Engineering Course, or General Course in Architecture, before the B.Sc. programs.

Please NOTE: We offer an intensive preparatory course for all Freshmen in Mathematics and for engineering students in Physics from 25th - to 28th August.

NOTE: Freshmen students who will not write the Placement Test for any reason (late arrival, after 31st August 2009 etc.) may join only the Pre-Engineering, or General Course in Architecture.

Living Costs
  • Accommodation
    Private accommodation is available from EUR 300 to 500 per month depending on location and comfort. During the registration week, we offer an organized free help for new students to find accommodation in the city.

  • Food and additional expenses are approximately EUR 170 to 270 per month. More information is available in the Students' Office, Building Z and on the website www.tanok.bme.hu ("Survival Manual").

  • Health insurance, entitling students for medical care costs about EUR 120/semester. Insurance is the condition of both the enrolment at the university and the residence permit. For EU citizens, a valid European Heatlth Insurance card is necessary.
